How to Find Calm in the Chaos

mental health self-care Nov 03, 2020

If you've had bouts of anxiety, long days in bed, little to no motivation and even complete mental breakdowns, you must know: you're not alone. 2020 has been a shake-up on every level. Staying positive can feel tough when we can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, but seeing the glass half-full is a practice to hone now, if ever. Now is also the time to take the one power that can't be taken: the power to choose your mindset. Here are three ways to find calm in the chaos and value in every experience.

1. Look for Lessons COVID-19 has taught us so much. From macro-lessons like how to better prepare for the unexpected to the acquisition of micro-tools like baking bomb banana bread. If we choose to look deeper, we can see the biggest lesson of all: nothing is guaranteed in life. Every moment is an opportunity for a brand new surprise. Live openly and practice asking, "why is this happening for me?"

2. Take Nothing for Granted This time is unique. We may never have a situation like this again in our lifetimes. Though that may leave you cheering, there's something sacred about the quiet, slower paced lifestyle we've all picked up in the last six months. We can choose to tend to our gardens right now. In this space, we can weed, water, plant, and harvest. We can use this time to dust off the shelves and clear out the old. Can't tell if this is literal or figurative? You choose.

3. Practice Acceptance Acceptance is the opposite of weak. Acceptance is the tranquil smile in the face of disaster. Acceptance is brave, bold and authentic. Acceptance is looking at the situation for what it is and making the absolute best out of it. Acceptance has no expectations and no assumptions. Acceptance accomplished is peace. Choose peace.
