maui makai relinquishing control sports bars Mar 20, 2024

I'm making plans, baby. That's kinda been the name of my game lately. Planning trips and birthdays and launch parties and all kinds of celebrations. This is me at my best. This is my zone. Aries season always picks up for me like this and I look forward to it every dang year.

1. Sports bars.

Only for UFC, as any other sport has me completely lost, but brother, the energy of everyone going off while someone is getting their eyeballs squeezed out of their head in a triangle is just peak delight. There is no energy like a rowdy bar behind a cause even though I'm just drinking water and having nachos.

2. Jungle nails.

I don't know what took me this long, but I typed in "jungle nails" on Pinterest and found myself a goldmine. Saving this for a time where I have 37 hours to get my nails done.

3. Surfboards as wall art.

We're (well... mostly Sean) sanding down some old surfboards, repainting them and making them into sick wall pieces. One black and one.... drumroll please.... PINK. I finally got him to agree on it. But shh! He thinks it's peach.

4. Maui Makai.

I started a digital magazine and I couldn't be more excited. Think of it as your local's guide to Maui. From the yummy hole-in-the-wall restaurants to the most luxurious spas in town, Maui Makai is your go-to place for all things quality, culture and consciousness. Since talking story is the aloha language, we pay a tribute to the best stuff around by covering the people, places and things that make this island so special.

5. Joyfull by Radhi Devlukia-Shetty.

My sweet friend, Vinky gave me this book as an early birthday present. The plant-based recipes are so luscious and beautiful and it is stitching so much of my interest in Ayurveda (the world's oldest healing system) together; A very conscious and delicious approach to wellness.

6. Buying returned/used items on Amazon.

I've resisted being an Amazon shopper for a long time. I want to support local, but let's be honest, sometimes it just is what it is... this feels a little better (and saves a few bucks) when it's available.

7. Relinquishing control.

I'm doing it guys! I'm really doing it! I'm using my birthday as the perfect practice ground (a day I care a lot about). I asked my partner to handle the food (something I'm usually a control freak over), my bestie to handle décor (another thing I'm a control freak over), and am trusting the rest to come together (woah). I'm even going to have my friends who will be in town that weekend help me set up. And it's a pajama party which means even my outfit will be chill. This is nuts guys. And actually... it feels good.

8. Acceptance.

Once you accept, the whole world opens up around you. That's all.

9. Putting my EMF-emitting devices on airplane mode.

Scientists have been sus about EMF's for a minute now linking them to:

  • sleep disturbances, including insomnia.
  • headache.
  • depression and depressive symptoms.
  • tiredness and fatigue.
  • dysesthesia (a painful, often itchy sensation)
  • lack of concentration.
  • changes in memory.
  • dizziness.

And are in the throes of discovering if they are causing cancer. Regardless, I'm not about it. I'm trying to eliminate this more and more (as I write with my laptop on my lap). I've mentioned on here before how much I love my Oura ring, but I started becoming wary that EMFs were leeching into me in yet another way. Lo and behold, they were. But I did find that I can turn it on airplane mode until I'm ready to look at the data again (and it still tracks all my stuff!)! WOOH! Do this as often as you can with as many devices as you can.
